Book Launch: Dr Tomasz Szczepański’s Publication on Prison Service Officers Murdered in the Katyn Massacre

On 13 May 2024, the Polish Army Museum at the Warsaw Citadel hosted the launch of a new publication by Dr Tomasz Szczepański, researcher of the Katyn Museum, entitled “Funkcjonariusze i pracownicy więziennictwa RP zabici w zbrodni katyńskiej” [in English: Officers and Employees of the Polish Prison Service Murdered in the Katyn Massacre]. The book was published by the Central Board of the Prison Service, which also co-organised the event.
Guests were welcomed by Sebastian Karwat, Director of the Katyn Museum. Opening remarks were then delivered by Colonel Bartłomiej Turbiarz, Deputy Director General of the Polish Prison Service, and Sławomir Frątczak, former Director of the Katyn Museum.
The formal part of the programme concluded with a presentation of the book by its author. In this important publication, Dr Szczepański restores to public memory the stories of officers and employees of the prison service of the Second Polish Republic who were murdered by Soviets during the Katyn Massacre. Each victim — from senior officials to rank-and-file prison guards — is commemorated through an individual biographical profile, bringing their lives and service back into historical focus.
The event was accompanied by a special display of artefacts from the Museum’s collection, connected to prison service officers who were among the victims of the Katyn Massacre.
