Book Launch Event: “Podwaliny polskiej kynologii policyjnej (1919–1939). Działalność służbowa podinsp. Alojzego Grimma”

On 1 September, the Katyn Museum hosted the launch of “Podwaliny polskiej kynologii policyjnej (1919–1939). Działalność służbowa podinsp. Alojzego Grimma” [in English: The Foundations of Polish Police Canine Training (1919–1939). The Service of Deputy Inspector Alojzy Grimm], written by Piotr Mrozowski and published by the Police Training Centre in Legionowo.
The choice of venue was deeply significant. Deputy Inspector Alojzy Grimm, regarded as the founder of Polish police canine training, was one of the victims of the Katyn massacre. His remains were laid to rest at Mednoye Memorial Complex alongside more than 6,000 Polish police officers — prisoners from the Ostashkov camp — who were murdered by Soviet forces in Tver in the spring of 1940.
During the event, Piotr Mrozowski — lecturer at the Police Canine Training Department of the Police Training Centre in Legionowo and a former police dog handler — offered a detailed and engaging account of the development of service dog training and handler education within the pre-war Polish State Police. In preparing the book, he drew extensively on historical archives, specialist literature, and the original works of Deputy Inspector Alojzy Grimm himself.
This meticulously researched monograph is highly recommended not only to dog lovers, but also to police officers, handlers, and all those interested in the history of working dogs in public service.
