Citadel Day – a family picnic inspired by history

Sebastian Karwat, Head of the Katyn Museum, guides visitors through the Museum’s exhibition

This year’s Citadel Day – a family picnic inspired by history – is now behind us, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the residents of Warsaw, as well as visitors from across Poland, who joined us at the Katyn Museum stand at the Warsaw Citadel.
Among the attractions on display was a scale model of the Starobilsk prisoner-of-war camp, which proved especially popular with younger visitors. We were also honoured to present, outside the walls of the Caponier, personal mementoes connected with three victims of the Katyn massacre: Colonel Kazimierz Burczak, Major Wiktor Konstanty Pikulski, and Captain Kazimierz Sarnowicz.
We would also like to thank everyone who visited the Katyn Museum that day, whether exploring the exhibitions independently or taking part in the curator-led tour conducted by the Museum’s Director, Sebastian Karwat.
We hope that the anniversary of the striking of the first Virtuti Militari medals — minted in Warsaw on 15 June 1792, three days before the victorious Battle of Zieleńce — will remain in visitors’ memory. We look forward to celebrating Citadel Day together again next year, while also honouring the victims of the Katyn massacre, many of whom were awarded Poland’s highest military decoration for valour.
