Commemoration of the 86th Anniversary of the Katyn Massacre in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki

On 19 April 2026, commemorations marking the 86th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre were held in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki. The event brought together local residents, representatives of municipal authorities, the armed forces, and families of the victims.
The ceremony commenced with the laying of flowers and the lighting of candles at memorial plaques located on the grounds of the former Electrotechnical Battalion barracks. Participants then proceeded to the Church of St Michael the Archangel, where a Holy Mass was celebrated. Following the service, students from Secondary School No. 2 presented a specially prepared artistic programme.
The commemorations continued with a march to the square by the monument “Glory to Those Who Gave Their Lives for Poland”, where the guard of honour was commanded by Colonel Mariusz Łuszczyński of the 2nd Mazovian Sapper Regiment. During the official addresses, the Mayor of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, Sebastian Sosiński, along with invited guests, including representatives of Katyn organisations, paid tribute to the victims, emphasising the enduring significance of this tragedy in Polish history.
Karolina Wesołowska, Curator at the Katyn Museum, speaking on behalf of its Head, Sebastian Karwat, highlighted the importance of such commemorative events and the Museum’s mission to preserve the memory of the victims of the Katyn Massacre.
As part of the ceremony, a Katyn Oak of Remembrance was planted in honour of Second Lieutenant (Reserve, Sappers) Walerian Innocenty Zatchej. At the conclusion of the event, participants laid white roses at the memorial. The ceremony ended with a roll call of remembrance and a ceremonial salute.
