Delegation of the Operational Command of the Armed Forces Visits the Katyn Museum
On 15 April 2026, as part of the commemorations marking the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Katyn Massacre, a delegation from the Operational Command of the Armed Forces visited the Katyn Museum. The purpose of the visit was to pay tribute to the victims of the Katyn Massacre and to explore the permanent exhibition devoted to the fate of Polish prisoners of war and members of the Polish intelligentsia murdered by the NKVD in the spring of 1940.
The delegation was guided through the exhibition by Dr Tomasz Szczepański, who presented the history of the Katyn Massacre, the origins of the Katyn Museum and its mission to document, research and commemorate one of the greatest crimes committed against prisoners of war who were citizens of the Second Polish Republic. The fate of the victims of the Katyn Massacre remains a symbol of lawlessness and of the crime committed against Poland’s military, state and social elites. During the visit, the guests had the opportunity to view the Museum’s unique collections, including personal belongings recovered during exhumation works carried out at Katyn, Kharkiv and Mednoye, as well as archival documents, photographs and artefacts donated by the victims’ families, all presented in the Museum’s permanent exhibition.
The visit provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of historical memory and served as a reminder of the need to preserve the memory of the victims’ service and sacrifice. It also expressed respect for all those who fell victim to Soviet repression.
The visit concluded with the delegation laying a memorial candle at the Katyn Epitaph in tribute to the murdered victims.
