On Thursday, 20 March, a commemorative event marking the 85th anniversary of the Katyn massacre was held at the Jan Amos Comenius School of Economics in Leszno, Greater Poland. The event was attended by students and teachers from the school.
Dr Tomasz Szczepański of the Katyn Museum presented the history of the Katyn massacre and the long struggle to uncover and preserve the truth about the crime. Dr Adrian Gendera of the Regional Museum in Leszno discussed the biographies of victims from Leszno and the surrounding region, and examined the local dimensions of the so-called “Katyn lie” during the period of the Polish People’s Republic. Michał Walkowiak, a history teacher at the School of Economics, also shared his personal reflections on the persistence of memory surrounding the Katyn case under communist rule in Poland.
