Meeting with Professor Leszek Kania

Professor Leszek Kania during his lecture

On 29 November, the Katyń Museum, located within the historic Warsaw Citadel, hosted an author meeting with Professor Leszek Kania of the University of Zielona Góra. The event focused on his latest book, „Budziszyn 1945. Ostatnia kontrofensywa Wehrmachtu. Fakty i mity” [in English: Bautzen 1945: The Last Wehrmacht Counteroffensive. Facts and Myths]. The meeting attracted a large audience interested in the final months of the Second World War and the fighting that took place in Lusatia in April 1945. It provided an opportunity to discuss the historical background of the Battle of Bautzen — one of the last major German counteroffensives on the Eastern Front — as well as the military decisions taken during the operation and the long-standing historical debates surrounding these events. During the lecture, Professor Kania addressed several important issues, including the role of General Karol Świerczewski, the impact of Soviet command decisions on the course of the battle, and the myths and interpretations that shaped the post-war understanding of the Battle of Bautzen for decades. The lecture and subsequent discussion were met with great interest from the audience.
We would like to thank all participants for attending the event.
