Sebastian Karwat Appointed Director of the Katyn Museum
On 1 April 2024, Sebastian Karwat was appointed Director of the Katyn Museum, succeeding Sławomir Frątczak, the Museum’s long-serving Director, who retired.
Sebastian Karwat has been associated with the Katyn Museum for many years. As Director of one of the Museum’s sections, he was responsible for the archival collections, including the study and cataloguing of documents recovered from the mass graves during the archaeological and exhumation works carried out in Kharkiv and Mednoye in the 1990s. He has also been actively involved in the Museum’s educational activities, guiding both organised groups and individual visitors through the permanent exhibition. His appointment as Director of the Museum represents a continuation of his long-standing commitment to the institution and its mission of commemorating the victims of the Katyn Massacre, conducting scholarly research, and promoting historical education.
For many years, Sławomir Frątczak led the Katyn Museum, playing a key role in its development, the preparation of the permanent exhibition, the shaping of its scholarly and educational programme, and the establishment of the Museum as one of the leading institutions dedicated to documenting and disseminating knowledge about the Katyn Massacre. Upon his retirement, he entrusted the leadership of the Museum to one of his closest collaborators.
