Visit by Uniformed Classes from the School Complex in Solec nad Wisłą and Members of Rifle Unit 1005 Lipsko named after Dionizy Czachowski
On 10 May 2023, the Katyn Museum welcomed students from the uniformed classes of the School Complex in Solec nad Wisłą and members of Rifle Unit 1005 Lipsko named after Dionizy Czachowski. The visit began with an assembly on the Parade Ground in front of the Museum, from where the group proceeded to tour the permanent exhibition.
Curator Karolina Kosiak guided the visitors through the exhibition, introducing them to the history of the Katyn massacre and the fate of the Polish officers murdered by the NKVD in 1940. Through the personal belongings of the victims, archival documents and objects recovered during exhumation works, she demonstrated that each exhibit tells the story of an individual whose life and service were brought to a tragic end by this crime.
For young people involved in uniformed education and the traditions of the Polish Riflemen’s Associations, the visit was not only a valuable history lesson but also an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of service, responsibility and remembrance. Encountering authentic historical artefacts from events that took place more than eighty years ago offers a deeper understanding of the Katyn massacre and explains why preserving the memory of its victims remains an important part of Poland’s national identity.
Visits of this kind form an important element of the educational mission of the Katyn Museum. They help young people recognise that patriotism is not merely about knowing historical dates and events, but above all about remembering those who remained faithful to their military oath and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Direct contact with the artefacts preserved and displayed by the Museum fosters respect for history and a sense of responsibility for passing this memory on to future generations.
