Visit of Polish State Authorities to the Katyn Museum
On 13 April 2023, the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, honoured the victims of the Katyn massacre by laying a wreath and lighting a memorial candle at the Epitaph in the Katyn Museum.
On the eve of the opening of the temporary exhibition “Aleksander Witlib – Guardian of Memory”, the President also visited the exhibition, accompanied by the Director of the Polish Army Muzeum Paweł Żurkowski, the Director of the Katyn Museum, Sławomir Z. Frątczak, and its curator, Sebastian Karwat.
Speaking to journalists, the President referred to the war in Ukraine: We saw those people murdered in the streets of Bucha. We saw those people killed in Bucha’s basements with a shot to the back of the head, their hands bound behind their backs. These crimes cry out for justice; they demand that those responsible be brought to justice. As he explained, those responsible for the crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine during the previous year must, in particular, be held accountable, so that atrocities such as the Katyn massacre and the crimes currently being committed in Ukraine may never happen again.
Later, the Katyn Museum was visited by the Marshal of the Sejm, Elżbieta Witek, and the Minister of National Defence, Mariusz Błaszczak, who paid tribute to the victims of the Katyn massacre. After laying wreaths at the Katyn Epitaph, they also toured the exhibition “Aleksander Witlib – Guardian of Memory” together with the Director of the Museum and the exhibition’s curator, Sebastian Karwat.
