Visit of the Katyn Museum Team to the Headquarters of the “Police Family 1939” Association in Katowice

On 5 June 2024, the headquarters of the National Association “Police Family 1939” welcomed a delegation from the Katyn Museum, led by its Director, Sebastian Karwat.
During the visit, the Museum team formally returned a collection of artefacts from the mass burial pits in Mednoye following specialist conservation work carried out by the Museum. The objects, loaned by the Katyn Museum to the Association, form the core of the historical exhibition and educational programme “Discovering History: Ostashkov – Tver – Mednoye”. The exhibition presented in the Katowice Memorial Chamber also serves as an important educational resource for a number of historical initiatives, including “Meeting with History”, “Police Officers in the Service of History” and “Silesian Police: Past and Present”. Between January 2008 and the end of May 2024, more than 24,000 participants took part in these educational programmes. Through direct contact with authentic historical artefacts, visitors – particularly secondary school students – are given a unique opportunity to learn about the history of the Polish State Police of the Second Republic, the experiences of its officers during the Second World War, and the fate of Polish police officers murdered as part of the Katyn Massacre.
